What To Expect

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities
The Egyptian museum in Cairo houses over 120,000 artifacts, including the contents of Tutankhamen’s tomb and most of the mummies that have been discovered since the 19th century. The museum’s exhibits span from the beginning of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt (approximately 2700 BC) through the Greco-Roman period. The building consists of two floors. On the ground floor, you can follow the history of Egypt from the Old Kingdom up through the Greco-Roman period by turning left at the entrance and looping around the museum. This provides a good background for most of Egypt’s ancient history.

Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary)
The most famous site in Coptic Cairo is the Church of the Virgin Mary, better known by its nickname, the Hanging Church. This name comes from the fact that it was built atop the walls of the 4th century BC Roman fortress of Babylon, the remains of which are still visible about Coptic Cairo

Although the effect is significantly diminished today by the fact that the ground level has risen over 30 feet over the centuries due to the accumulation of trash and dust, originally this church towered above its surroundings on the high walls of the fortress.

Coptic Cairo
Coptic Cairo is a unique area with Old Cairo that has a concentration of Christian churches and other sites that date from the centuries between the decline of the pharaonic religion and the arrival of Islam when Egypt had a Christian majority. Coptic Cairo is largely built around the fort of Babylon on upon the remains of its walls.

The Coptic Museum is here, which holds the largest collection of Coptic Christian artwork and artifacts in the world. Founded in 1910, the museum records Coptic history from the arrival of Christianity in Egypt up through the Ottoman era, displaying a mixture of artwork influenced by Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman traditions.

Mosque of Muhammad Ali
However, when Muhammed Ali came to power, he was determined to erase the influence of the Mamluks, who had controlled Egypt for six centuries before him, and demolished their palaces within the fortress. He also built one of Cairo’s most recognizable landmarks.

His Alabaster Mosque, built in memory of a deceased son, towers over the rest of the complex. Its silhouette is the most dominant feature of Cairo’s eastern skyline. In addition to these two mosques, the Citadel also contains the National Military Museum, full of uniforms and weapons from Egypt long history, a Police Museum, and several more museums dedicated to the palace of Muhammed Ali.

Cairo Citadel
The Citadel looks very different today than it did in its original capacity as a fortress the Crusader armies. It has been expanded and remodeled by many different rulers. In the 14th century, Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammed built a mosque there that still bears his name and the Southern Enclosure of the fort next to Saladin’s original walls. The most noticeable changes came in the 19th century.

Hidden treasures of Cairo city
HMountain, 29-04-2022
The Cairo city and museum tour was very insightful and a immersive experience. We were able to get the full experience of old Cairo and were even able to stray from the beaten tourist track finding new hidden treasures with our tour guide Nevine. To get the real feel of Cairo and it’s vibrant history I’d definitely recommend this tour!

Nevine was an excellent tour guide. She was very knowledgeable about the area and very kind. Looking forward to my next trip to Cairo so I can take a tour of the Giza pyramids with Nevine.

The Best Cairo Experience

I don't like when people talk mostly about the guide in these reviews, but we can honestly say that Nevin was the best tour guide we could ask for, and her company alone was worth the tour. She was very passionate about every topic and she made the trip excellent. She was kind and genuine, and she took a lot of lovely photos of us.

A few words about the tour itself:
- we started from Coptic Cairo, and we were impressed how you can find churces, mosques and synagogues in one place similar to Jerusalem. Also we had no idea about the importance of this site from a Christian perspective (here is where the Holy Family stayed after running away from Israel)
- on the road we made a quick stop to a local Essential Oil shop
- then we went to the Citadel to visit the Mohamed Ali Mosque, but Nevin advised us to visit the old mosque as well and it was worth it
- then we decided to eat lunch (included) on a Falluca boat on the Nile (not included but worth it)
- we finished the day at the Egyptian Museum, where Nevin was like an Egyptian Wikipedia page.

The tour itself was great, the guide even more. Honestly I had booked this particular one because I read all the other reviews about her, so now I can confirm that it's all true and I strongly recommend the tour and especially Nevin.

Hope it helps!
Facinating tour with lovely tour guide

I found out about Nevin and Deluxe Tours on a travel blog. After reading about the tours offered and the raving reviews about Nevin in particular, I contacted Deluxe Tours before we arrived in Egypt and arranged for a city tour with the lovely Nevin (asked for her by name to ensure we did not miss her).

Organizing the tour was effortless, a few emails and whatsapps with Deluxe and we were all set to go :) Nevin picked us up from our hotel in the morning and when we got back in the late afternoon, we walked away knowing that we made a friend in Egypt.

Before I start raving about the wonders of ancient Egypt - let me start with Nevin, because for us, she is what made our day in Cairo a magical experience. Nevin is a beautiful person with the kindest heart. She is easygoing, fun and super super smart!! The worst part of the day, was having to say goodbye to her - but I know that our paths will cross again in the future and look forward to that day already!

We started off the morning with a visit to the Egyptian Museum. If you are planning to visit the museum, my advice would be to do so with a guide. The place is massive and without someone explaining the ancient wonders, you will pretty much wander around and miss out on all the history. Nevin spent a couple of years studying in the museum and this goes to show - we were fascinated by all the information she shared and left the museum in absolute awe. It is extremely interesting and definitely worth a visit! A must do with a tour guide like Nevin.

After the museum we were pretty tired from taking in all the information and Nevin stopped off to pick up the best Falafel we ever had. I still dream about the food to this day. We stopped of at a perfumery where we enjoyed mint tea and learning about Egyptian oils and perfumes. We bought a couple of bottles for friends and family at home and they loved their gifts - who can resist Egyptian oils :)

Next stop was the old church in old Cairo where the holy family stayed for 3 months after they left Israel. This was by far the highlight of our tour, not part of the city tour but something Nevin added, as through our discussions with her she realized this stop would be something my husband and I would enjoy and be interested in. Whenever I think back to our time in Cairo this was an absolute highlight for me personally.

After the old city we visited the Citadel where we saw the best view of Cairo - even the pyramids in the distance. Nevin explained the rich history in this area and again we were fascinated by it all.

We ended off the day at the Khan El Khalili market enjoying Egyptian coffee and freshly squeezed juice with Nevin before we said our goodbyes and the driver took us back to our hotel.

Nevin, thank you so much for showing us around your special and interesting city. We enjoyed every second of it and spending time with you. I have been on a lot of organized tours around the world and this one is by far the most memorable, because of you - I left Cairo with wonderful memories and will cherish them always.

Thank you!
