Sultan Qaitbey built this picturesque fortress during the 14th century to defend Alexandria from the advances of the Ottoman Empire. His efforts were in vain since the Ottomans took control of Egypt in 1512, but the fortress has remained, strategically located on a thin arm of land that extends out into Alexandria’s harbor from the corniche.

The fortress’ current form is not the original. It was heavily damaged during the British bombardment of Alexandria during a nationalist uprising against British hegemony in 1882 and rebuilt around the turn of the 20th century.

Top notch guide and tour from Cairo!

We did the Alexandria tour with the guide Sherif Attia and everything was perfect! Sherif has a vast knowledge of the Egyptian culture and traditions. He is extremely kind and friendly and speaks many languages. He knows everyone so the timing is well-managed and the activities are complete to its fullest. Sherif took very good photos of us at each of the attractions of this tour. We enjoyed the catacombs and the citadel of Qaitbay the most! The driver named also Sherif was very attentive at each stop. The car had full A/C, water, juice, and candies. Definitely would book again with this rockstar!
