Seven churches and chapels are hidden within a series of caves inside the Monastery; the Virgin Mary and St. Simon Cathedral is the largest church. Inside the spacious caverns, beautiful engravings cover the walls, each representing stories from the Bible. St. Simon’s Hall, a large seating arena that accommodates 2,000 people for spiritual meetings, sits on the upper level.

The Monastery also includes an education center, an area for children, as well as a school for the deaf. Now considered one of the largest Coptic monasteries in Egypt, the grandeur of the churches hidden within the heart of the Mokattam Hills belie their relatively recent construction.

It was a true tour to stroll around the old city & to visit Coptic area as being very interesting part of tailormade itinerary for our family. In that way to see the glorious suspended baslican style church and furthermore, it is Egypt central patriarch orthodox hanging church approximately for more than 16 hundred years set up & stood stable upon old fort. Lots of heritage engraved on cedar wood which is gaily inlaided with ebony and ivory.. Multiple of icons.. Geometric motifs & floral patterns in every single inch of architecture. We found out 7 churches around with variant narrative stories and especially the crypt in where baby jesus stayed. We are also impressed to know that, the original torah is manuscripted on sheets of animal skins of deers still maintained in geneza inside the Synagogue. Outside area the grand mosque. To grasp idea Egypt is the the prettiest ethnic community worldwide.. We really enjoyed all services, so knowledgeable guide and skillful driver.. With deluxe travel, always will be tour repeaters.... Highly recommended.

My son and I went with Mahmoud Bader from DeLuxe Tours on the standard Coptic tour. Our driver was Anwar from the same company. The area was not crowded due to it being a Saturday afternoon. Bear in mind all churches closes at 4 pm. Mahmoud has a great general knowledge of the religions and churches of the area and explained the symbolism of the building features of the Hanging Church and the Cript church. Also the role of the Romans and their buildings before them. He was always polite and patient and took pictures of us at the appropriate points. The Convent of St George inside the market area was an interesting addition with a fascinating martyr story. We also visited the Ts George church and the Greek graveyard with interesting tomb stones. We would recommend Mahmoud and use him again. Anwar drove us from the Red sea and was a very safe driver, never speeding and delivering us through the expected heavy traffic with no incidents.
